Located in eastern Georgia, in the Augusta MSA (GA-SC), Columbia County is bordered by the Savannah River and 71,000-acre Clark's Hill Lake, one of the largest freshwater bodies of water in the southeastern United States. The county is comprised of five communities, or trade areas – Appling, Evans, Grovetown, Harlem, and Martinez – of which the largest is the Evans trade area, which also serves as the government center for the county.
With a county-wide population of more than 131,000 – and more than 560,000 in the Augusta MSA – the county's economy is based upon a diverse mix of government, medical, military, professional, and light industrial sectors. [Also included in the Augusta MSA is neighboring Aiken, South Carolina.]
