Located in eastern Georgia, in a region known as the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), Columbia County is bordered by the Savannah River and 71,000-acre Clark's Hill Lake, one of the largest freshwater bodies of water in the southeastern United States. The county is comprised of five communities, or trade areas – Appling, Evans, Grovetown, Harlem, and Martinez – of which the largest is the Evans trade area, which also serves as the government center for the county.
With a county-wide population of more than 124,000 – and more than 500,000 in the Augusta-Evans (GA) metropolitan statistical area (MSA) – the county's economy is based upon a diverse mix of government, medical, military, professional, and light industrial sectors. [Also included in the Augusta-Evans MSA is neighboring Aiken, South Carolina.]
The home to world-class firms such as Quad/Graphics, TaxSlayer, John Deere, Club Car, and Serta, the county has one of the area's highest standards of living, a fact frequently noted in nationwide surveys by MONEY magazine and U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT.
