Combining History and Recreation: The Savannah Rapids Visitor Center
The historic Savannah Rapids Visitor Center overlooks the Augusta Canal Headgates. The fully restored Visitor Center was the original Canal Lockkeeper's Cottage. Inside, visitors can observe the lockkeeper's living quarters and a pictorial exhibit that helps capture the historical significance of the man-made Augusta Canal. Built along the Savannah River, the Augusta Canal is the nation's only industrial power canal still in use for its original purpose. Constructed in 1845 to harness the water power of the Savannah River, the Augusta Canal offers recreational and visually breathtaking scenery along 8.5 miles of towpath and waterway.
Columbia County is fortunate not only to possess its own quality venues, but to border Georgia’s 2nd largest city (Augusta) in the heart of a 500,000-person MSA.
