Named for the famed explorer Christopher Columbus, our county is one cool discovery.

Located just two hours east of Atlanta, the county is blessed with tremendous economic assets – an ideal interstate location along I-20 (which bi-sects the county for more than 20 miles), a low cost for doing business (with a “94” cost-of-living index for the MSA, according to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine), and outstanding infrastructure (fueled by the county’s AAA bond rating).   Plus – for the skiing, boating, or fishing enthusiast – we’ve got miles of coastline along one of the southeast’s largest recreational reservoirs, Clarks Hill Lake. 

But it’s the skill level of our residents that make Columbia County one of Georgia's fastest growing and nationally recognized places to live and work.  [According to recently released Census statistics, our county’s high school graduation rate is 90.8%, and more than 34% of our residents hold a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree.]  This well-trained and highly motivated workforce consists of people dedicated to creating a better community for a wide variety of businesses, including those enterprises serving the medical and military sectors – two areas of the local economy that account for nearly 30% of the region’s workforce.

Since the year 2000, our population has grown by 39% to over 124,000 people, a testament to Columbia County as a residential destination.  County crime rates are exceptionally low, and our home ownership rate is high (82.3%).  [Source: U. S. Census Bureau, 2010.]   We’re also a civic-minded community – in 2008, our voter participation rate was 76.9%, one of the highest in Georgia.
